About Bike + Design

Bike + Design is a series of events highlighting the history, innovation, and design of Bay Area bicycle culture. Curated by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA SF) in collaboration with California College of the Arts (CCA).

Lectures will revolve around themes of the history and legacy of bicycle culture; material, form, and technical advancements; and branding and contemporary design concerns. The purpose of these lectures is to bring together disparate populations to celebrate the innovation and legacy of SF bike culture. The speakers span diverse experiences and subjects, including the titans, who have defined and changed the industry, and the challengers and start ups, who bring unique innovations to the craft.

Explore different facets of the bike industry from start-ups to world-renowned companies located right here in the Bay Area.

Lectures

The lecture series will weave the story of Bike + Design to educate and entertain. Join us to learn about the hidden side of the common and uncommon bicycle.

"Woah, where did you get that bike?"

"I made it."

Bike Frame: Build Your Own

CCA offers a unique opportunity to learn how to build a bicycle frame right here in San Francisco. Over the course of a summer studio term, students will immerse themselves in the creation of a handmade steel bicycle frame. Students will learn about frame geometry and methods of bicycle frame construction, and will use brazing techniques to create frames of their own design. Students will learn brass fillet and silver brazing - traditional methods of bicycle frame construction - as well as hand tool and machine tool techniques to cut and prepare the bicycle frame tubes for joining.

Everything - from cutting the tubes to prepping the metal to alignment to wielding the torch - is done by you, the student. Students will gain fabrication skills applicable to a wide variety of disciplines, experience metal working in a formal workshop environment, and fundamental oxy-acetylene techniques.

Two sessions: June 2-July 11 and July 10-August 17.

All levels are welcome. Space is limited. $100 materials fee payable at registration.
