CCA offers a unique opportunity to learn how to build a bicycle frame right here in San Francisco. Over the course of a summer studio term, students will immerse themselves in the creation of a handmade steel bicycle frame. Students will learn about frame geometry and methods of bicycle frame construction, and will use brazing techniques to create frames of their own design. Students will learn brass fillet and silver brazing - traditional methods of bicycle frame construction - as well as hand tool and machine tool techniques to cut and prepare the bicycle frame tubes for joining.
Everything - from cutting the tubes to prepping the metal to alignment to wielding the torch - is done by you, the student. Students will gain fabrication skills applicable to a wide variety of disciplines, experience metal working in a formal workshop environment, and fundamental oxy-acetylene techniques.
Two sessions: June 2-July 11 and July 10-August 17.
All levels are welcome. Space is limited. $100 materials fee payable at registration.
A historical epicenter of bicycle culture, the Bay Area continues to serve as a base for emergent trends and technologies.
